Disney Lorcana: Ultimate Beginner Guide to All 13 Amazing Sets

Disney Lorcana is the trading card game that turned Disney fans into card players almost overnight. Created by Ravensburger and launched in August 2023, Disney Lorcana lets you build decks of Disney characters, called glimmers, and race to collect lore. It is easy to learn, beautiful to collect and has grown to more than a dozen sets. This guide explains how Disney Lorcana works, lists every set in order, covers the rarities and helps you decide which products to buy in Australia.

If you are coming from Pokémon or One Piece, you will find Disney Lorcana friendly and quick. Many players in our community enjoy it alongside the games covered in our trading card blog.

What is Disney Lorcana?

In Disney Lorcana, players are Illumineers, magical figures who summon glimmers of Disney characters using ink. Each glimmer is a version of a familiar character, sometimes in a surprising new role, such as a pirate Mickey or a sorcerer Elsa. The aim is simple: be the first player to collect 20 lore. Characters gain lore by questing, and they can challenge the opposing characters to slow your opponent down.

  • Publisher: Ravensburger, in partnership with Disney
  • Launch: The First Chapter, August 2023
  • Goal: be the first to collect 20 lore
  • Deck: 60 cards, a maximum of 4 copies of any card, using up to 2 ink colours
  • Ink colours: Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Steel
  • Booster box: 24 packs of 12 cards

A big part of the appeal is the art. Each glimmer is drawn in a painterly style that feels like a page from a storybook, and familiar characters often appear in unexpected roles. Seeing a favourite hero reimagined as a pirate, a scholar or a villain is half the fun of opening a pack.

How to play Disney Lorcana

Each turn you may put one card from your hand into your inkwell, face down, as long as it shows the inkwell symbol. Ink in your inkwell is used to pay for cards. You then play characters, items, actions and songs, and use your characters to quest for lore or challenge your opponent’s characters. Characters need a turn to dry before they can quest or challenge, which keeps the game balanced.

  1. Ready your cards and draw
  2. Add one inkable card to your inkwell
  3. Play characters, items, actions and songs using ink
  4. Quest with dry characters to gain lore, or challenge exerted opposing characters
  5. Pass the turn. The first player to 20 lore wins

Songs are a clever twist. They can be played by paying ink or by exerting a character with enough cost to sing them, so a well-built deck can play several cards in a single turn.

Choosing what goes into the inkwell is the key decision in every game. Ink a card too early and you lose an option for later, but hold too much and you will not have the ink to play your best characters. Learning that balance is what turns a beginner into a strong player.

Every Disney Lorcana set in order

Lorcana releases a new main set roughly every three months. Here is the full list of main sets so far.

  1. The First Chapter, August 2023
  2. Rise of the Floodborn, November 2023
  3. Into the Inklands, February 2024
  4. Ursula’s Return, May 2024
  5. Shimmering Skies, August 2024
  6. Azurite Sea, November 2024
  7. Archazia’s Island, March 2025
  8. Reign of Jafar, May 2025
  9. Fabled, August 2025
  10. Whispers in the Well, November 2025
  11. Winterspell, February 2026
  12. Wilds Unknown, May 2026
  13. Attack of the Vine!, July 2026

Whispers in the Well brought franchises such as The Black Cauldron, Gargoyles and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow into the game. Wilds Unknown introduced Pixar for the first time, with Toy Story and The Incredibles, and Attack of the Vine! added Monsters, Inc. as the Illumineers battled an unstoppable vine. A city-themed set called Hyperia City, featuring Coco, was announced to follow.

Each new set also continues the storyline. The Illumineers explore new corners of Lorcana, meet new glimmers and face fresh threats, and the story gives every release a theme that shapes its artwork and mechanics. Collectors who follow the story often build binders set by set to keep the narrative in order.

Disney Lorcana card rarities

Every pack contains a mix of rarities, and the rarest cards are some of the most beautiful in any card game.

  • Common, Uncommon and Rare: the core of every set
  • Super Rare: strong cards with a special frame
  • Legendary: the most powerful characters and effects
  • Enchanted: alternate full-art foil versions of popular cards, the main chase of each set
  • Epic and Iconic: higher rarities introduced from Fabled onwards

Enchanted cards are the cards most collectors chase. They feature borderless artwork with a rainbow foil finish and are rare enough that many booster boxes contain none, so they are often bought as singles.

Pack contents follow a consistent pattern. Each 12-card booster has six commons, three uncommons, two cards of rare or higher, and one foil that can be any rarity, including an Enchanted. That foil slot is where the biggest surprises come from.

Choosing your first Disney Lorcana deck

The easiest start is a starter deck, which contains a ready-to-play two-colour deck and a booster pack. Once you know which colours you enjoy, open booster packs or buy singles to improve your deck. Popular beginner pairings include Amber and Steel for a straightforward character-focused game, or Ruby and Amethyst for a faster, trickier style.

Because each deck uses only two ink colours, it is easy to build around your favourite characters. Many players start with a deck themed on their favourite film and refine it over time.

Looking after your cards is simple. Sleeve your deck before you play so cards are protected from wear, and store your best foils in toploaders or magnetic cases. Foil cards can curl slightly in humid weather, so keep binders upright in a cool, dry room and avoid leaving them in a hot car during an Australian summer.

Many local game stores run weekly league nights with prizes and promo cards. They are a great place to meet other players, trade duplicates and learn new strategies from more experienced Illumineers.

Formats and rotation

The main competitive format is Core Constructed, which uses recent sets and rotates older ones out as new sets arrive. Infinity Constructed allows cards from every set. If you mainly play with friends, any set works, but if you want to play at a local league, check which sets are legal in Core Constructed before buying older boxes.

If you are buying for a family, a starter deck for each player is the best first purchase. Two decks give you everything you need to play straight away, and the included booster packs give each player a little surprise to open.

Collectors who prefer sealed product should store boxes flat, out of sunlight and with the shrink wrap intact. Older boxes have become harder to find, so a well-kept box is always easier to open, display or sell later.
