Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon: 7 Amazing Differences

Thinking about collecting Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon cards instead of, or as well as, English? For the first time, every language of the anniversary set launched on the same day, so Australian collectors can choose between English, Japanese and Chinese product from day one.

This guide explains what the Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon set is, the seven biggest differences from English, how the Chinese versions compare and which option suits different collectors. For the wider story of the set, see our Pokémon 30th Anniversary guide.

What is the Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon set?

In Japan, the anniversary expansion is called “30th CELEBRATION” and carries the set code M6a. It is part of Japan’s MEGA era and released on 16 September 2026, the same day as English and every other language. The Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon set shares its key features with English: every card is foil, every pack contains one of 30 Pikachu cards, and the new Futuristic Rare rarity debuts with Mew ex and Mewtwo ex.

7 differences between Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon and English

1. Six cards in every pack

Japanese packs contain six foil cards. English packs contain five foil cards plus a foil Basic Energy, so Japanese packs give you one extra playable card each time.

2. A true booster box

A Japanese M6a booster box holds 20 packs, with an official Japanese price of ¥360 per pack and ¥7,200 per box. The announced English range has no booster box, so English collectors buy packs through Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Bundles and premium collections instead.

3. Exclusive Japanese products

Japan has products that are not part of the English range:

  • Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon: two 60-card decks with a playmat and accessories.
  • FUTURISTIC BOX: a premium collector box with two Pikachu ex Futuristic Rare promos and accessories.
  • 30th CELEBRATION Card Sets: nine sets released on 16 October 2026, one for each region from Kanto to Paldea, each with three foil starter promos and two packs.

4. Different numbering and checklists

Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon cards use their own set numbering, so a Japanese card can have a different number from its English version. If you collect both languages, keep two separate checklists. Our 30th Anniversary Pokémon card list covers the English set in detail.

5. Limited supply outside Japan

In Japan, Pokémon Center sold Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon boxes through a lottery to manage demand. That means fewer boxes reach overseas stores, and prices outside Japan are usually higher than the Japanese recommended price.

6. Language for play

The artwork is the same, but Japanese cards have Japanese text. If you plan to play at local events, English cards are usually the simplest choice; check the official Play! Pokémon rules for language eligibility.

7. Look and feel

Many collectors like the finish and centring of Japanese cards, and the compact Japanese box makes an attractive display piece. Whether that matters is personal, but it is a big reason Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon product is so popular.

How much does Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon cost in Japan?

These are the official Japanese recommended prices, including tax. They are a useful guide to how products compare, even though prices outside Japan are higher.

  • Booster pack (6 cards): ¥360
  • Booster box (20 packs): ¥7,200
  • Premium Deck Set Espeon & Umbreon: ¥6,200
  • FUTURISTIC BOX: ¥27,500
  • 30th CELEBRATION Card Set: ¥1,200 each

Imported Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon product costs more in Australia because of limited lottery allocations, international shipping and strong demand. Comparing products by pack count and exclusive contents is fairer than comparing a converted yen price with a local shelf price.

The 30th CELEBRATION Card Sets explained

The nine Card Sets are one of the most charming parts of the Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon range. Each set represents one region, from Kanto to Paldea, and includes foil promos of that region’s three starter Pokémon. Across all nine sets you get all 27 starters, plus two booster packs and a paper card stand in each box.

They are a lovely option if you collect a favourite generation, and a full run of nine makes a striking display.

Shrink wrap and sealing on Japanese boxes

Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon booster boxes may be sold with or without an outer shrink wrap, depending on how they were distributed. The packs inside are individually sealed either way, but a box with intact factory shrink is the safest choice if you plan to keep it sealed. Check each listing for the condition and ask the seller if anything is unclear.

Keeping more than one language in a binder

  • Use separate binder pages for each language so numbering stays in order.
  • Label the spine or first page with the set name and language.
  • Track the 30 Pikachu per language, since the same artwork appears in each.
  • Store Japanese and English sealed product the same way: flat, dry and out of sunlight.

What about Chinese 30th Anniversary Pokémon?

Chinese collectors get their own versions of the set, and both launched on 16 September 2026.

Simplified Chinese (30thC)

Simplified Chinese packs contain six foil cards. The range includes deck sets, display gift boxes and the Iridescent Future Memorial Box, which, like the Japanese FUTURISTIC BOX, includes two Pikachu ex Futuristic Rare promos. There is also a Charizard figure gift box. Pack counts vary between products, so check each listing before you buy, including our Simplified Chinese 30th Celebration box.

Traditional Chinese (M6aF)

Traditional Chinese has its own expansion box, a premium deck set, a FUTURISTIC BOX and smaller starter Pokémon products.

If you are still unsure, open a few packs of each language before committing to a full set. Seeing the cards in hand is the quickest way to decide which version you enjoy most, and the Pikachu Rares make every pack worth opening whichever language you choose.

Japanese vs English at a glance

  • Release date: 16 September 2026 for both.
  • Cards per pack: six foil cards in Japanese; five foil cards and a foil Basic Energy in English.
  • Booster box: 20 packs in Japanese; no booster box in the announced English range.
  • Exclusive products: FUTURISTIC BOX, Premium Deck Set and nine Card Sets in Japanese; Ultra-Premium Collections and Figure Collections in English.
  • Checklist: separate numbering for each language.
  • Best for: Japanese suits pack openers and display collectors; English suits players and promo hunters.

Neither version is better overall. The right choice depends on whether you want to play, open packs or build a display, and many collectors end up enjoying both.

Which version should Australian collectors buy?

  • You want to play: English is the easiest choice for local events and casual games with friends.
  • You love opening packs: Japanese 30th Anniversary Pokémon boxes give you 20 six-card packs in one sealed box.
  • You want a display piece: the Japanese FUTURISTIC BOX or the Simplified Chinese Iridescent Future Memorial Box are unique to those languages.
  • You collect everything: start with one language and finish its Pikachu set before branching out, as three full checklists is a big project.
